Coordinate Traverse Calculator

Compute and adjust closed and link traverse coordinates using Bowditch Compass Rule. Calculate latitudes, departures, closing errors, and relative precision.

Formula and method

Compass layout traversing evaluates new coord positions based on baseline reference points, horizontal distance D, and bearing theta.

N_{new} = N_{start} + D \cos(\theta) \quad , \quad E_{new} = E_{start} + D \sin(\theta)

  1. Establish starting Northing (N) and Easting (E) benchmark coordinates.
  2. Input traverse bearing angle (theta) and horizontal distance (D).
  3. Evaluate Northing change (Latitude): dN = D * cos(theta).
  4. Evaluate Easting change (Departure): dE = D * sin(theta).
  5. Integrate the new position coordinates and calculate elevation changes with vertical curves.

Frequently asked questions

How are new coordinates computed?

Northing change (latitude) = D × cos(θ) and Easting change (departure) = D × sin(θ), where D is the horizontal distance and θ is the bearing angle from north. New coordinates are added to the starting station.

What bearing format is used?

Bearing angles are entered in decimal degrees measured clockwise from north (0° to 360°). The calculator also computes the quadrant bearing for field survey notes.

Can I include elevation changes?

Yes. Enter the vertical angle or slope percentage to compute the elevation change and the new station elevation alongside the horizontal coordinates.
