Brick Wall & Mortar Quantity Calculator

Estimate the number of standard bricks, mortar volume, and dry cement-sand quantities for single or double-wythe brick masonry walls with waste margins.

Formula and method

Estimates standard clay bricks, mortar volume, sand weight, and cement bags required for masonry wall assemblies.

Bricks = \frac{V_{wall}}{V_{brick+joint}} \times (1 + Waste\%)

  1. Find wall dimensions: length, height, and brick row thickness.
  2. Configure brick size inputs and mortar joint bedding thicknesses (typically 10mm or 0.4 inches).
  3. Calculate total wall volume and subtract raw brick content to isolate the mortar volume.
  4. Formulate required dry sand, dry cement bags (using typical density values) from mix ratios (e.g. 1:4).

Frequently asked questions

What brick sizes are supported?

Standard modular brick (190×90×90mm), UK brick (215×102.5×65mm), and custom sizes. You can specify brick length, height, and thickness in any unit.

How is mortar volume calculated?

The calculator computes total wall volume, subtracts the volume occupied by bricks, and adds a waste factor. The dry mortar volume is then split into cement and sand based on your mix ratio (e.g., 1:4, 1:6).

What mortar ratios can I use?

Common mix ratios like 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, and 1:6 (cement:sand) are supported. You can also enter a custom ratio for your specific mortar specification.
