Rebar Quantity & Weight Calculator

Calculate total rebar segment lengths, weight per bar size, overlap lap splices, and spacing counts for concrete slabs, beams, and columns with CivilMath.

Formula and method

Calculates the reinforcing steel requirements including spacing, splice overlap corrections, unit grade weights, and overall quantity.

Weight_{total} = L_{total} \times \frac{\pi d^2}{4} \times \rho_{steel}

  1. Input element overall structural span and clear concrete cover clearances.
  2. Determine layout direction bar spacing requirements.
  3. Add overlap lap ratios (typically 40D to 50D splice length) for spans exceeding raw rod lengths.
  4. Translate structural lengths into unit weights (kg/m or lbs/ft) based on nominal bar sizes.

Frequently asked questions

What rebar sizes are supported?

The calculator supports standard rebar diameters from #3 (10mm) to #18 (57mm) including metric equivalents. Select your bar size and the calculator uses the corresponding cross-sectional area and unit weight.

How are lap splices calculated?

Overlap lengths are computed as 40D to 50D (40 to 50 times bar diameter) based on code standards. You can customize the lap ratio and the maximum raw bar length available.

Can I specify custom spacing?

Yes. Input center-to-center spacing in either direction. The calculator determines the number of bars required to cover the given span at the specified spacing.
