Steel Weight Calculator

Quickly compute unit and total weight of structural steel sections including I-beams, angles, channels, flat plates, round bars, and hollow structural tubes.

Formula and method

Estimates the weight of structural steel bars, plates, beams, or hollow tubes using accurate geometric equations and material density constants.

Mass = Volume \times Density \quad [\rho = 7850\text{ kg/m}^3]

  1. Select steel profile section (Plate, Circular rod, Pipe, or H-Beam profile).
  2. Retrieve cross-sectional dimensions (thickness, width, outer diameter, web/flange structures).
  3. Find the sectional area and structural volume based on section length.
  4. Multiply by standard alloy steel density (7850 kg/m³ or 490 lbs/ft³) to calculate unit and total weights.

Frequently asked questions

What steel section shapes are supported?

Four standard structural profiles: flat plate/bar, circular solid rod, hollow pipe/tube, and H-beam (wide flange). Each has its own geometric calculation for cross-sectional area.

What density value is used?

Standard structural steel density: 7850 kg/m³ (metric) or 490 lb/ft³ (imperial). This is the standard density for A36, A992, and most common structural steel grades.

Can I calculate unit weight per meter?

Yes. The calculator shows both total weight for the given length and weight per unit length, which is useful for estimating linear material takeoffs.
